• Raga Durga

Durga is a pentatonic Raga, of intense beauty. It portrays yearning of a maiden calling to her lover, of her hopes and desires, of thunder and lightening adding to her sense of loneliness and misery, of unapproachable heights and massive distances. This Madhyama dominated Raga, by omitting Gandhara and Nishada seems to leap from Re to Ma and Dha To Sa and yet is not able to bridge the gulf of separation and loneliness. Here Amjad Ali Khan recaptures for us all the splendor and glory of the Raga Durga, After a brief Alap he plays a Teen Tal (16 beats) composition in the Madhya Laya and then a Razakhani or fast Gat.

• Raga Nandkauns

Raga Nandkauns is yet another delightful variation acheved by grafting additional Shuddha Gandhara and Pancham on the popular Malkauns. The others have been Jogkauns, Chandranandan and madhukauns. It claims no affinity with the existing Raga Nand or Anandi. In fact the word Nand refers to the name of the person in whose memory this raga has been dedicated. Nandkauns remains distinct from Jogkauns in its exclusive use of Komal Nishada and an occasional Pa Sa leap. The Gandharas, so near and yet so far from each other, steal a kiss now and then but always behind the thin silken curtain of the Madhyama. After Giving us a picure of the Raga in the Alap, Amjad Ali Khan expounds it through a Maseetkhani Gat in Teen Tal which later bursts into a sparkling Razakhani Gat in which the Jhala seems to rain down like dew-drops in a never-ending stream.
