Side One |
|

Basant is a Raga Of late night variety. As its very name
suggests, it is associated with the spring season. Consequently an atmosphere
of complete abandon and liveliness pervades throughout its exposition. After
establishing the basic structure of the raga with the use of Komal (Flat)
Madhyama (4th note) in the Aroha (ascent), the maestro gives flourishing
touches to bring out vividly all the salient features of the raga. The rhythm
employed is Teen Taal consisting of a cycle of 16 matras (beats). |
Side Two |
|
|
This side has two items and each has a charm of its own. The
Poorbi Dhun with which the side begins has its origin in the rich folklore of
Uttar Pradesh and it is so enchanting that there probably is not a single
concert where Bismillah Khan is allowed to wind up without rendering it. It
is one of his trump cards with which he carries his listeners into a divine
trance. |
|
The Second piece renders the popular and famous bhajan
"Raghupati Raghav Rajaram' which was so dear to Gandhiji. The powerful
melody of this sublime number flowing from the shehnai which had its origins
in temple rituals of yore is truly overwhelming and constitutes the piece de
resistance. |
